Registration underway for high school and college students

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – This summer will find some Rutgers Summer Session students chasing tornadoes in Kansas, learning how to start their own businesses or finding out how crime scene investigations really work.

Registration is underway for these and more than 2,200 credit-bearing classes offered during three sessions from May 29 through August 15.

Rutgers Summer Session is open to both Rutgers students and visiting students from other colleges and universities, as well as to qualified high school students accepted into the Rutgers Summer Scholars Program.

Summer session classes enable students to earn credits toward their degrees, improve their GPAs or reduce their course loads during the regular academic year. For high school students, they offer an opportunity to earn college credits and become acclimated to college-level study. Smaller, more intimate classes help maximize learning on a compressed schedule.

While offering traditional courses in scores of disciplines, Rutgers Summer Session also peppers the schedule with topics that enable students to think and learn “outside the box.”

Courses this summer include Special Topics in Meteorology taught by Steven Decker, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The course will take students on a field trip to Kansas, where they will learn about and chase storms on the Great Plains.

Developing Small Business Skills will be co-taught by Joe Shure, a Rutgers graduate and co-founder of the Intersect Fund, a nonprofit that trains entrepreneurs to run their own businesses, and also provides microloans. The class is open to high school as well as college students.

Michael Emanuel, who is on faculty in the criminal justice program, will teach Scientific Applications in Justice, an elective that will cover real-life forensic cases.

Registration deadlines for the three summer sessions are May 10, June 6 and June 20. An additional fee will be charged for late registration.
