Bronx Man Charged in Death of Mother and Daughter Following Accident

Emanuel Garcia was charged with aggravated manslaugther following an accident Monday at Ryders Lane and Winton Road.

A Bronx, N.Y. man was charged with aggravated manslaughter after he sped through a red light and crashed into the car of a mother and daughter from Spotswood on Monday, Oct. 1 on Ryders Lane.

Following the accident, Emanuel Garcia, 29, ran from the scene, but was apprehended outside an office building on Summerhill Road shortly before 3:42 p.m., according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Garcia was charged with two counts of aggravated manslaughter following the deaths of Dolores Krowicki, 83, and her daughter, Karen A. Larue, 60, both of Spotswood. Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves, sitting in New Brunswick, set bail at $1 million for Garcia, who is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.

A preliminary investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the East Brunswick Police Department shows that Garcia was stopped at a red traffic light on Route 18 northbound at Racetrack Road shortly before 3 p.m. When the light turned gree, Garcia made a sudden, illegal U-turn onto the southbound side of Route 18.

An East Brunswick police car, which also had stopped for the red light, pursued Garcia, who continued to Rues Lane, driving in excess of the posted 40-mile-per-hour speed limit, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Police followed, but for safety reasons, considered the defendant’s speed and location, and terminated the pursuit on Rues Lane.

The investigation further showed that Garcia continued driving at speeds greater than the posted limit on Ryders Lane and used the shoulder of the road to pass several vehicles before he disregarded a red light at the Winton Road intersection and broadsided Krowicki’s vehicle, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The victim’s vehicle, a 1995 Ford Taurus, was making a left turn from Winton Road onto Ryders Lane when it was hit. The Taurus spun into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle, which had stopped for the red light on Ryders Lane. That vehicle rolled into the vehicle behind it, but no one in those two vehicles was injured.

The charges were filed after Krowicki was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at 3:40 p.m., and her daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:38 p.m.

The results of autopsies being performed by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office were not immediately available.

Garcia, who was not injured in the crash, ran from the scene, but was apprehended outside an office building on Summerhill Road shortly before 3:42 p.m.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Sean Garrison of the East Brunswick Police Department at 732-390-6900, or Investigator Gregory Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3904.

Jessica -- The police did not touch the suspect's car and were forced to abandon the chase once he left the highway.

well then some other police officer should have taken it over to innocent lives were taken away. why was it aggravated manslaughter. It should be vechicular homicide or 2 counts of vehicular manslaughter?

If they had a crystal ball they would have shot him dead. But they don't, so all they could do is follow the safest procedure.

That's not the point, Jessica. Suspects often flee at high rates of speed because they are trying to outrun the cops. There's no police department in the country that would sanction a high-speed car chase through a residential area - except perhaps if it involved a kidnapping or other significant threat. It's unfortunate that this guy kept driving at a high rate of speed. There are schools and parks on that stretch of the road. Police bumping a vehicle at a high rate of speed could have ended up killing even more people.

I saw when he first popped the u turn and hit our vehicle. There was no indication the officer was going to pull him over. As soon as it turned green he did the illegal u turn and we almost collided as well as the Toyota next to us, that was then that the officer turned his lights on and pursued him I only saw him on route 18 and he was gunning it and passed the red light by the mall weaving in and out of lanes. I just don't understand why he did that because he didn't want to go to jail for a suspended license look at him now looking at much more time. My prayers go out to the family of the women who passed!!

My guess is that there will be even more to this story as the investigation continues. Completely suspect that someone would take this kind of action just over a suspended license.

i am very close friends with Emmanuel Garcia. probably one of my closest friends...its sad that this has happened to these two innocent females and i feel for the family who must endure the pain of losing not one one but two people who they love but I know emmanuel like the back of my hand, i know hes probably beating himself over the head over this. It must be difficult to live with the fact that he has ended to lives so my prayers go out to everyone involved. not only the family of the lost ones but also him and his family.

If he's beating himself up over this, I hope he beats himself senseless. I witnessed the accident at Winton/Ryders. I was in the third car in oncoming traffic. I saw him flying down Ryders, saw him slam into the Taurus, and saw their car and his spinning out of control directly at the two other cars and me. My car is clearly visible in all photos. His car came to rest on the median-thank God for the median-about 10 feet from my vehicle. The coward jumped out of his death torpedo and ran. How he managed to be unhurt after the velocity of the crash is beyond me. I've already given my statement to the investigators. If necessary I will gladly go to court to see that those ladies get justice, as well as the people who were directly in front of me. I want the court to lock Garcia up and throw away the key. This is not the first time he has been in trouble for reckless driving and endangering the lives of others, and if they don't make sure he's off the road for a good long time he is SURE to do it again. He could be a great guy to you but he has caused the deaths of 2 people. He had choices to make and he made them...he chose to speed, he chose not to stop and he chose to run away. You know, he doesn't seem like such a great guy to me. I will never, ever forget what I saw.
I also want to say that the EB police and Spotswood EMTs did excellent work at the scene and with the investigation.
I hope the coward Garcia doesn't see the light of day until he is very old.

None of you saw those 2 cars spinning wildly out of control. You have no idea of the terror of the two women who died because of Garcia's actions. You have no idea of the terror of we who were directly in the line of fire of Garcia's and his victim's cars. You didn't see those two women covered in blood, dying right in front of you. You didn't see the heroic efforts of the EMTs to attempt to save them. You don't think you have the right to judge. You are right. You didn't see any of this. I did as did the two people in front of me. As did people who just happened to be on the playground or standing on the corner or in the school bus. The East Brunswick police did and are continuing to do an outstanding job of investigating this horrifying event. The judge sitting in New Brunswick will pass judgement on Garcia with enough evidence to put him away for a very long time. Garcia's "remorse" just doesn't cut it. As I've said,he had choices to make and he made them. He chose to make an illegal u-turn, he chose to drive at excessive speeds, he chose to blow the light, he chose not to stop when he saw their car....he didn't even try...and he chose to RUN AWAY after his car came to rest on the median feet from my car. He has a previous record of driving on a suspended license and for reckless driving. He has hopefully lost his driving privilege forever. 2 people are dead because of his cowardice and indifference to the lives of others. Never forget. I won't.
