Council Names Hughes as President
Michael Hughes will serve as council president and James Wendell will serve as vice president for 2012.
The Township Council elected Michael Hughes 4-1 to serve as president for 2012, and fellow Republican James Wendell to serve as vice president.
Hughes was nominated Monday by former president Camille Ferraro and seconded by Wendell.
Democrat Nancy Pinkin nominated Ferraro, but didn’t receive a second.
“Thank you very much for the honor, but I would like to withdraw my name from consideration,” said Ferraro following her nomination.
After Hughes was elected, Ferraro nominated Wendell to serve as vice president, and Pinkin nominated Democrat Denise Contrino. But when it came time to vote, Pinkin voted for Wendell and Contrino voted for herself.
Hughes, 22, attended East Brunswick High School before eventually serving on the East Brunswick Board of Education. Now a council member, he is the youngest person to serve on either of those governing bodies.
