Firefighter, Teens Save Woman From Drowning in Car

A pair of 14-year-olds and a volunteer firefighter rescued an elderly woman trapped in a car submerged by floodwaters at a train underpass in Glen Rock, after the woman maneuvered around safety cones to prevent passage through the flooded area.

Plainsboro Olympian Wins Gold, Beats World Record a Second Time

Rebecca Soni won her first gold medal at the London Olympics and broke her world record time in the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday. She had previously snagged her first medal from the London Olympics on Monday, with a silver in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Assemblyman Schroeder Charged With Writing $400k In Bad Checks

New Jersey State Assemblyman Robert Schroeder was charged Friday with writing almost $400,000 worth of bogus checks to people who invested in his Hillsdale-based company, All Points International Distributors, according to a press release from the state attorney general's office.

Assemblyman Moriarty Arrested on DWI Charge

Fourth Legislative District Assemblyman Paul D. Moriarty was arrested Tuesday afternoon in his hometown of Washington Township, Gloucester County, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Moriarty, 55, served as Washington Township mayor from 2004 through 2008, and was elected to the Assembly in 2005. He reportedly refused to provide a breath sample once at the police station, according to one source, who spoke to Patch on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Morris Teen Revives Woman Pulled From Ocean

A Morris Township teen was in the right place at the right time early Tuesday evening when she revived a woman at a beach in Ocean County.

The woman was spotted by Michael Ems, of East Hampton, and Catherine Ghee, of Connecticut. When the two pulled the woman from the water, she had no pulse and was not breathing, Butler said.

Truck That Transported Piece For Barnegat 9/11 Memorial Implicated In Alleged Scam

The same truck that transported a tower piece recovered from the wreckage of Ground Zero to Barnegat last year — to serve as a memorial for those who died — is now at the center of an alleged scam.

Thomas J. Scalgione, 40, of Manahawkin and Mark Anthony Niemczyk, 66, of Tinton Falls were accused this week of promoting a bogus 9/11 victims' charity by driving around in a pickup truck painted with the names of first responders who perished.

State Police Conduct Massive Drug Bust in Nearby Metuchen

The New Jersey State Police Drug Trafficking Unit arrested four men and seized forty kilos of cocaine and $1 million from a warehouse in Metuchen, the State Police announced on Monday. The July 24 bust was part of an ongoing narcotics investigation that has yielded more than $3 million in assets.

Report: Rob Andrews' Spending Under Investigation

Longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews is under investigation by a House ethics panel for his use of campaign funds, the Huffington Post reports. 

Andrews, a Haddon Heights resident, reportedly spent $97,000 on at least 18 trips to California from 2007 to 2011. He was first elected to Congress in 1990 and represents New Jersey's 1st Congressional District, which comprises parts of Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties.

Man Arrested in Texas in Connection With May Atlantic City Murder

An Atlantic City man was arrested in southern Texas Monday night in connection with the murder of an Atlantic City woman in May, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor James P. McClain announced Monday night.

David J. Williams, 48, was charged with the murder of 23-year-old Siddiqah Bryant in May, McClain said. Bryant was discovered dead inside a parked van on the 1800 block of Arctic Avenue on May 17 after being reported missing earlier in the day, McClain said

2 Bergen County cops face tampering probe after car chase that ended in gunfire [video]

Investigators are probing the actions of two Bergen County Police officers who pursued two suspects in a 2010 botched house burglary in Paramus that led to a chaotic six-town car chase, gunshots, suspects fleeing into the woods and two arrests.

The criminal investigation of the officers has created strife between County Executive Kathleen Donovan and Prosecutor John Molinelli, NorthJersey.com reports. [NorthJersey.com]
