Girls Cross Country Runs Out to 1-1 Start

Youngsters leading the pack

The East Brunswick High girls cross country team will take a 1-1 record into its meet today against JP Stevens.

"The girls are doing well," East Brunswick Coach Michael Talbot noted.

The team opened the season with a 22-42 win over Old Bridge in a meet held at Thompson Park on Sept 13.

East Brunswick took eight of the top 10 spots in the race, including a first by Melody Fakhrzadeh (22:48) and a third by Sara Frost (23:04), both sophomores.

Kelsey McDonald, another sophomore, was seventh (23:43). Juniors Nancy Wang (fifth in 23:27), Jessica Bloom (eighth in 24:36) and Joy Cui (10th in 25:02) also cracked the top 10. So did seniors Samantha Young (sixth in 23:31) and Rachel Lee (ninth in 25:00).

The success of the younger runners is a great sign for the future for East Brunswick. It will return the majority of its lead pack next season.

Erin Nfonoyim (26:42), Sienna Fallon (26:48), Avital Breverman (26:55), Marissa Kircher (27:06), Nicole Mizhari (27:08), Grace Huang (27:17), Dana Cohen (27:20), Stephanie Harkavy (27:34), Jessica Eker (27:55), Daniella Woods (28:33), Ruth Sun (28:44), Samantha Fong (28:45), Kristen Berezniak (28:54), Kayla Sampson (29:11), Cindy Zhang (29:14), Hana Skwish (29:28), Bijal  Shah (29:49), Lisa Cohen (30:35), Vivien Chen (33:07) and Allison Loeser (34:22) also competed in the race for East Brunswick.

East Brunswick was defeated by South Brunswick, 23-34, on Sept. 20.

Frost (21:06), Young (21:34), McDonald (21:38) and Fakhrzadeh (21:42) took the fourth through seven spots. Wang (12th at 22:22) was East Brunswick's other scorer.

Bloom (22:54), Cui (23:40), Lee (24:04), Mizhar (24:08)i, Breverman (24:14), Harkavy (24:33), Nfonoyim (24:58), Berezniak (25:12), Fallon (25:21), Huang (25:25), Kircher (25:39), Dana Cohen (25:45), Skwish (26:05), Eker (26:17), Shah (26:19), Zhang (26:43), Sampson (26:49), Sun (27:09), Fong (27:11), Lisa Cohen (28:35), Chen (30:15), Loeser (30:52), Sun (31:17) and Yllza Marku (36:00) also competed in the race for East Brunswick.

"The girls ran well, but lost a close one to South Brunswick," Talbot said.
