Robbers Hit Unlocked Cars on Fresh Ponds

Police are investigating a series of break-ins that occurred Saturday, Sept. 22.

Bandits broke into five cars on Fresh Ponds Road during the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 22, according to police.

East Brunswick Police Units responded to Fresh Ponds Road on Saturday morning to investigate several vehicles that had been broken into sometime overnight. All the vehicles that had been broken into were left unlocked and parked in the resident’s driveways.

Assorted items were taken from the vehicles including a pocketbook, a GPS unit, credit cards and cash.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective John Breen of the East Brunswick Police Department’s Investigative Division at 732-390-6990.

In addition, the police department is reminding residents to lock their car doors and not to leave valuables in their vehicles.

By "breaking into", I guess we mean a stranger lifting a door handle, finding the car open, and helping themselves? Leaving the car wide open, unattended is bad enough..but, leaving a pocketbook, gps, and credit cards in the unlocked car overnight? The victims certainly didn't deserve it, but that's some awfully low hanging fruit for the non-conforming members of our society. It doesn't take much to lock a car and at least provide some minimal protection for criminals to go find somebody else who is too lazy to lock their car.

I live in that neighborhood and it is very rural and quiet. They had false sense of security living in the area!

That false sense of security is exactly what makes it easy pickings for a burglar.

I would rather have them open the door and take much of nothing than have the car truly broken into. Repairing doors and windows will most likely cost far more than the value of anything they can steal.

That is very true. I know people who had convertibles that would leave them unlocked so nobody would cut into the ragtop. However, it's apparent these fine members of society were simply just pulling handles and moving on to cars that were already open. Somebody could have avoided the credit card conundrum and still had their gps if they just locked the doors.
