Township Appoints Full Time Judge

The Township Approved a resolution appointing a fulltime judge to the municipal court post, Monday. Previously, the township used three part-time judges to serve on the bench.

Robyn Brown has been an assistant prosecutor for more than 11 years, first in Essex County and for the past eight years, in Middlesex County.  She and her husband are East Brunswick residents with two sons.

The following is a statement from Mayor David Stahl regarding the appointment:

“For the past four years, we have worked tirelessly to make East Brunswick the best place to live. Our court system is an important component of East Brunswick; a place that hopefully many of us do not visit too often, but it is a vital part of our community nonetheless and as such it should be fair and efficient and representative of our community. The appointment of Robyn Brown to the bench will ensure that goal is met.

“A few have asked me about the economics and practicalities of changing from a system where we have three part time judges to a system where we have one full time and one part time judge.  As most of you know, my first priority has always been to the Township residents and ensuring that we remain fiscally sound.  When most towns in Middlesex County were raising taxes, we cut them.  We did this through wise decisions resulting in efficiency.  The time has come to address the same issues in our courtroom.  Hiring Ms. Brown will result in a savings to the Township, and in what I am confident will be better service.  Our backlog of cases needs to be addressed and I believe having one judge who is familiar with each case and who will be the constant judge hearing the same case will help to address this.

“Ms. Brown has been an Assistant Prosecutor for over eleven years, first in Essex County and for the past eight years, here in Middlesex County.  She and her husband are East Brunswick residents with two sons.

“Ms. Brown’s qualifications are outstanding and leave little doubt in my mind about the job she will do. For the past three years, she has run the County’s Drug Court program, overseeing the cases of over 300 individuals. She has also been a trial team supervisor for the past two years in Judge Pullen’s courtroom, a Superior Court judge. Judges, colleagues who have worked with her and adversaries against her, have all described Ms. Brown as “professional, hardworking and efficient.” She will be a great asset to the bench.

“Ms. Brown will work as many hours as needed to ensure our Court’s needs are addressed.  She will be available for our police officers when needed.  Currently in her role as drug court coordinator, Ms. Brown often handles after hours “crisis” calls, so this is really no different.

“As an African-American woman, Robyn Brown brings diversity to this Township; diversity much needed when neither our elected officials nor employees are truly representative of our community. The time has come for us to continue making East Brunswick the best place to live by addressing our judicial needs.”
