Members of Escrimeur, a club passionately devoted to the sport of fencing and based at The Fields on Cornwall Drive, will lay down their weapons on Sept. 15 and got on their bikes for a great cause; the Fight to Stop Diabetes.
Coach Leon Spector, his daughter Arielle and the family Robinson: Sarah, Maria, Gary and Ilona, rode 10 Miles in the Tour de Cure. Team mascot, Peanut, a wire-haired Dachshund rode shotgun on one of the bicycles and leisurely took in the Ocean Avenue views of Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Avon-on-Sea while the rest of the pack pedalled furiously.
Team Escrimeur also has the distinction of taking first place in most dollars raised in the Club/Organization category; actually exceeding the initial goal of $1,000. And, generous donations are still coming in. The cumulative total of donations, at last count, amounted to $199,632 for this Tour de Cure event alone.
ADA (American Diabetes Association) outdid itself in supporting all of the riders, many of whom were 'Red Riders'— those living with the challenges of Type 1 and 2 diabetes. Each rider was treated to a wonderful lunch and music by The Clamdiggers, a band steeped in the distinctive Asbury Park rock 'n roll tradition.
All in all, it was a beautiful day out at the seaside in September for a great cause—the fight to STOP DIABETES!
