Adding Storage Space to a Garage

Simple DIY projects for storing more stuff.

To prep for the recent hurricane, I recently emptied out one-half of my home’s very crowded garage. I relocated many things to our backyard shed, including mowers, bikes, seed and fertilizer, and a variety of garden tools.

But now that the hurricane has past, I’d like to move some of the stuff back to the garage, since it’s almost impossible now to get around our shed. And while I can get our minivan into the garage now, it is still a rather tight squeeze.

So, I figure that some garage organization is in order. With the exception of a set of plastic shelves in one corner of our garage, there is no storage whatsoever in the space.

I figure that the best way to get floor space in the garage is to create some sort of storage system, either out of pegboard, or by purchasing a wire wall-storage system. That way, I could hang our bikes, tools and things like our rakes and brooms up on the wall. From the rack or pegboard, I could also hang bins to hold smaller items like my many pairs of gardening gloves and some of the smaller gardening tools.

We also have a super-long extension ladder that’s now on the floor, so I’d like to hang that up, too, possibly with some sort of utility rack.

But whatever system I wind up choosing, hopefully it will be easy to install, since I am not that handy. I could sure use some tips on how to best get stuff up off the garage floor and up on the walls!

Hopefully, it won’t take me forever to get the system in place, as our garage walls have never been painted and should be painted before any storage system goes up. (I am not that good of a painter, either.)

Have any garage organization tips?
