East Brunswick Chiropractor Talks Healthy Changes for 2014

Focus on your health in the new year.

By Ken Freedman, DC

Do you want to make your life better in 2014? If so, some things will have to change.  After all, how can your situation improve this year and beyond if you keep doing the same things as you did last year?

Most people make a New Year’s resolution to change their body for the better.  What are the two most common resolutions people make?  They are: LOSING WEIGHT and EXERCISE!

Why is LOSING WEIGHT important?  Excess body fat feels uncomfortable, restricts movement, adds harmful pressure to joints and threatens vital organs like the heart and liver.  If you eat less calories than your body burns on a daily basis, your body will go to your fat reserves for the extra energy it needs.

But if you eat too little, your body can go into starvation mode. This process actually protects your fat reserves and instead burns your body’s muscle for energy.  This is very bad for your health.

Losing weight is about mathematics and selectivity.  Create a caloric deficit by consuming fewer calories than you are burning, within the healthy limits your metabolism requires so your body does not go into starvation mode.

Choose to consume healthier, portion-controlled meals from a wide variety of fresh foods.  They are best when steamed, poached, broiled, grilled, or baked.  Eliminate toxins, dyes, and preservatives from your diet.

Limit excessive intake of refined sugar, fat, carbs and fried foods.  Stay away from artificial sweeteners.  Many common maladies and diseases are related to poor diet.

If your waistline resembles a “muffin top,” and you want professional supervision, our Doctor Supervised ChiroThin Weight Loss Program is highly effective, safe and affordable.

We'll help you jumpstart your way to healthier eating habits and having a trimmer body for the New Year—without starvation.  Our results have been spectacular.

While individual results vary, most people have lost 20-35 pounds in only six weeks eating real food without exercise, drugs, hormones, prepackaged food, shakes or bars.

The program is a fraction of the cost of other nationally advertised weight loss programs, and may be covered under Health Saving and Flexible Spending Accounts.  It is safe for adults and children over age 10.  If you want to learn more, call us to schedule your complimentary consultation.

Why is EXERCISE important?  It is because youth is movement.  The better you move, the younger you feel—and act.  All forms of exercise involve movement.   Exercise brings oxygen into the body, essential for life.

Our area has a wide selection of options to exercise indoors and outdoors.  There are beautiful parks for you to enjoy hiking, running, cross country skiing, field team sports, golf courses, tennis courts, and biking.

We also have a diverse assortment of excellent private trainers, gyms and dance studios that offer everything from aerobics to Zumba.

The third change is the most important—HAVE A CHIROPRACTIC CHECKUP: Before you exercise, exercise caution.  Be sure your body’s spine is properly aligned.  Energy travels from your brain, down your spine, and out over the nerves.  This energy flows between your mind and your body. It controls how everything works.

In order for you to be healthy, nothing can interfere with this process.  The most common cause of spinal misalignments and nerve interference comes from physical, chemical and emotional stress.

This irritates nerves, impairs energy flow and will adversely affect your ability to exercise safely.  It will prevent you from getting the most out of the foods you are eating.  Be sure your spine is in good alignment without nerve impingement.

Put having a chiropractic checkup at the top of your list of healthy lifestyle actions for 2014. With 34-plus years of clinical experience, along with state-of-the-art, painless technology, we can measure and know how you’re doing.

This will give you the information you need to get the most out of eating right and exercise.  It will help you protect all of the things being healthy means to you.  To schedule a checkup, we have morning, afternoon and evening hours available by appointment, and we're open Saturdays.

Good things come in threes, and these three changes to your life will reward you with lifelong benefits!  Have a very healthy, happy New Year!
