Freecycling a Success

Tons of household items were reused or recycled this weekend.

Bicycles and gardening supplies. Old TVs and stereo equipment. Books, toys and games. All of it was brought to the second Freecycling event and all of it was taken away.

“The event was a huge success from both an environmental and a community perspective and was also a lot of fun,” said David Moskowitz of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission. “Not only were we able to keep a vast amount of stuff out of our landfill, but the event hammered home the mantra to "reuse rather than dispose."

Freecycling was a chance for people to donate and recycle virtually anything by bringing it to the Crystal Springs parking lot. People were invited to bring or take items such as furniture, clothing, bicycles, fish tanks, kitchen items, electronics and more. Items that were unusable, broken or not taken and left at the end of the day were hauled away by R. More Enterprises where they will be recycled safely.

“It was amazing how many high quality items exchanged hands for free instead of being thrown out,” said Moskowitz. “As each of the more than 400 cars came in on Sunday, the excitement rose about what treasures they might hold. With the great success of this second Freecycling event, the Friends are already looking to the next one in the fall. We hope to have two a year from now on, one in the spring and the other in the fall.”

Moskowtiz was sure to give thanks to the township for helping to promote the event and providing space at Crystal Springs to hold it. Moskowtiz also thanked R. Mor Enterprises and the East Brunswick Youth Council for providing volunteers.
