Gifts for Dad

Father's day suggestions for the special man in your life.

With Father’s Day this Sunday, many of us are looking for the perfect gift to give to our dads.

Dads can be hard to get gifts for, in my opinion. While there are plenty of inexpensive items that can wow just about any mom (like a gift certificate to a local spa or nail salon or perhaps a certificate for a full-house cleaning), treating one’s dad or husband on Father’s Day without breaking the bank can be tough. Sure, most dads would love a flat-screen TV, expensive electronics and pricey game-day tickets, but budgets can be tough these days.

As my daughters like to say to me, “We could give you a pair of socks, and you’d be happy.” Which, I admit, is true. (But I might be easier to please than other moms.) But give a dad yet another tie, and I doubt that he’d truly be happy.

There are a few suggestions for gifts that will show Dad you care without dipping into the kids’ college funds:

1. A Fun Day Out: Try treating Dad to an afternoon or two of fun doing something he likes. For example, at Windsor Greens Golf Center in West Windsor, Dad can have three one-hour golf lessons for just $99. Or perhaps you get a gift certificate for a fun family outing of mini golf. Or for those Dads who dream of flying, you can treat him to an introductory half-hour flying lessons atPrinceton Airport for just $99.

2. Downloads: For the Dad who owns an Ipod, Kindle, MP3 player or electronic reader, why not download some reads or tunes for him. Or, you can get him a gift card to websites likeAmazon.com or iTunes, and he can choose his own downloads.

3. Photo album or scrapbook: For the sentimental dad, you or the kids can create a photo album or scrapbook of fun family times shared together. What dad wouldn’t appreciate getting photos especially selected for him by his kids with some handwritten memories of some special times shared together?

4. Handmade Card: Skip Hallmark and give Dad a handmade card instead. The extra effort put into a homemade card with the addition of personal sentiments will no doubt put a smile on Dad’s face.

5. Backyard Barbecue: Firing up the grill might normally be Dad’s job, but he’ll likely appreciate a homemade meal for Father’s Day. Try serving up some steaks, salmon or grilled veggies, serve a cold drink or two and enjoy a relaxing meal at home together.
