JCP&L Upgrading Middlesex County System at Raritan River Substation

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is installing massive new circuit breakers as part of a $2.4 million upgrade project at the Raritan River Substation in Sayreville.

The 230 kilovolt (kV) circuit breakers, each measuring 15 feet tall and weighing about 5 tons, will help protect other equipment at the substation, enhance service reliability and help meet the increased demand for electricity in the Middlesex County area, the company says.

The new equipment will replace circuit breakers that were originally installed from 1986 to 1996.

“The Raritan River substation plays an important role in delivering electricity throughout Middlesex County,” said Anthony Hurley, JCP&L vice president of Operations. “The new breakers will help JCP&L deliver the quality level of service our customers expect and deserve.”

The effort is part of JCP&L’s $251 million infrastructure investment in 2014 and is one of several included in JCP&L’s “Energizing the Future” initiative to expand and enhance its transmission system.

Among the other projects scheduled for completion this year are a new 115 kV transmission line from Englishtown to Hightstown, a new substation in West Amwell and an upgrade to the Manalapan Substation, including the installation of a new 230kV transformer and two new distribution circuits.
