Memorial Day Weekend Roundup

A guide to events, parades and services in the area to commemorate Memorial Day this weekend.

Saturday

Lawrence Township Memorial Day Parade, 10 a.m., Lawrence Township. The parade will begin at Lawrence High School, procede north on Princeton Pike, then onto Darrah Lane, then Birchwood Knoll and conclude with a service in Lawrence Township Veterans Park at the end of Oaklyn Terrace. Questions should be directed to the Lawrence Township Recreation Department at (609) 844-7067.

, 10 a.m., Princeton. A Memorial Day parade sponsored by Spirit of Princeton will begin at Princeton Avenue and continue to Borough Hall. Operation Shoebox will be collecting items for soldiers. Bring donations to Suzanne Patterson Center behind Boro Hall after the parade.

, 12-5 p.m., 500 Mercer Road, Princeton. Watch a reenactment of the Battle of Princeton. There will be muskets, cannon, fifes and drums. There will also be tactical formations and drills and a combined arms assault with marching, loading and firing volleys. 

, 11:30 a.m., , Cranbury. Members of the New Jersey Civil War History Association will conduct their annual Memorial Day ceremony, sponsored by the Cranbury Historical Society. The half-hour event will feature reenactors in Civil War uniforms and women in period dress portraying the New Jersey 14th Regiment, most of whom came from Cranbury.

Sunday

, 1-3 p.m., , 1 Jean Walling Dr, East Brunswick. During the program, East Brunswick Township will dedicate three newly installed granite pavers at the Veterans Monument and East Brunswick’s mayor will read the names of the soldiers on the Hometown Heroes wall in the East Brunswick Municipal Building.

Monday

Ceremonial Wreath Honoring, 11 a.m., 148 Major Road, Monmouth Junction. American Legion Post 401 will present a ceremonial wreath honoring those who gave their lives in military service at 11 a.m. Monday at 148 Major Road in Monmouth Junction. Music will be provided by the South Brunswick High School Band and refreshments will be served. Call (732) 329-9861.

Memorial Day services at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9111 10 a.m. 11 Henderson Rd, Kendall Park.  Food and refreshments will be served between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. before the ceremony begins.  There will be a wreath ceremony and flag ceremony, including a bugle player to recognize the sacrifices of the men and women of the Armed Forces.

New Brunswick Memorial Day parade, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., New Brunswick Downtown, New Brunswick. The annual Veterans Alliance of Raritan Valleys Memorial Day parade will begin at Monument Park with an opening ceremony. The parade will cross the Albany Street Bridge to Highland Park and stop for a brief ceremony at the Doughboy statue at Raritan and Woodbridge avenues. The parade will end at Bank of America on Woodbridge Avenue. Call (732) 819-0411. 

, 9 a.m., Hightstown. The parade will begin on Stockton Street and will proceed down Academy Street to Bank Street and down Bank Street to Main Street. A ceremony will be held at Peddie Lake in downtown Hightstown (near the ) and another at the  on Main Street.  The parade will then proceed to Academy Street and up Morrison Avenue to finish with a ceremony at the  on Dutch Neck Road. After the parade, refreshments will be available at the VFW.

, 1 p.m., downtown Cranbury. The Cranbury Lions will host a parade featuring local veterans; Civil War re-enactors; musical groups like marching, pipe an drum, and polka bands; antique cars; emergency response equipment and more. Afterward, the lions will announce the winners for the best float and bicycle decoration contests and the annual spring raffle. Mayor Winthrop Cody will give the keynote speech. Sponsored by the Cranbury Lions Parade begins at Symmes Court and ends at Memorial Park next to the firehouse.
