Each Thursday, East Brunswick Patch offers Patch Picks, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off, and more.

Yesterday was Read Across America Day, in celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss.  We asked Chris Miller at the East Brunswick Public Library to make recommendations of good books to read for kids between 6 and 12.

  • "Diary of a Wimpy Kid 5: The Ugly Truth," by Greg Kinney

In the fifth entry of this popular series, Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older — all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side.

  • "The Red Pyramid," Rick Riordan 

In this series, the author of the "Percy Jackson" books focuses on a 14-year-old, Carter Kane, and his sister, Sadie, who have been in trouble ever since the gods of Ancient Egypt were unleashed in the modern world. These two descendants of the House of Life have some powers at their command, but the devious gods may be too much for them.

  • "The Adventures of Mark Twain, by Huckleberry Finn," by Robert Burleigh

The novel chronicles the life and times of Mark Twain as written by his one of his most favorite "sons," Huckleberry Finn. 

  • "The Witches of Worm," Zilpha Keatley Snyder

The story of a girl named Jessica wo adopts a skinny kitten named Worm. Unfortunately, Worm is making her do terrible things. Could the cat actually belong to a witch?

  • "The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester," Barbara O'Connor

One night, Owen Jester stumbles upon a 100 percent, genuine bonafide secret. Up next? More adventure than almost anyone can handle.
