Updated: Salamanders, Peepers and People (With Video AND Music!)

Salamanders have started their yearly migration across Beekman Road off Church Lane.

With temperatures in the 50s and a steady, sometimes heavy rainfall, Sunday was a perfect night for some Spotted Salamander spotting. Cars lined Church Lane near Beekman Road. They filled the side streets and took up every bit of available space as people braved the weather to see this once a year event.

Every year, the East Brunswick Environmental Commission and the Friends of East Brunswick Environmental Commission, working with the police department, closes Beekman Road, off Church Lane, for a few weeks in the spring so that hundreds of these four -legged creatures can cross from one side to the other. The salamanders leave their nesting grounds and make their way to nearby vernal pools to breed. After spending a few weeks there, the adults return to their home across the street.

Temperatures have to be good for the critters to come out, but when they do, the road is closed and people come to watch. If you head out, be sure to bring rain gear, dress warm and bring a flashlight. Check here and at the Friends of the Environmental Commission website at www.friendsebec.com for updates on the when the little guys come out again.
