Youth Group to Dance For a Cause

The St. Bartholomew's Youth Group will hold a dance-a-thon Saturday to raise money for two good causes.

Some walk, some rock, and some bike. This Saturday, the kids of the Saint Bartholomew’s Youth Group will dance.

On May 14, the St. Bart's Youth Group will hold Dance-A-Thon event in order to raise funds for two charities. Participants will raise money for the causes by asking donors to sponsor each hour they dance at the event, which will run from 7 to 11 p.m.

Any and all seventh through 12th grade students are invited to attend the dance-a-thon, which will be held at the St. Bartholomew Parish Hall at 470 Ryders Lane in East Brunswick. DJs from Hurricane Productions will provide the music.

The event, the first of its kind held by the St. Bart's Youth Group, is the brainchild of Erin Jones, St. Bartholomew’s Youth Minister.

“Hopefully we will have between 30 and 40 kids coming,” said Jones. “People can also show up at the event and register at the door.”

The first charity that will benefit from the event is the Sheila Lore Foundation, which was started by a St. Bartholomew’s parishioner.  It is named for Sheila Lore, who passed away after a battle with lung cancer in 2007. “Their foundation provides support for cancer patients and their families through St. Peters Hospital in New Brunswick,” Jones said. “Tracey Lore-Menture, who started the foundation with her husband Kevin, approached me and said that she wanted to do some kind of fundraising event involving kids.”

The second charity is the Santa Rosa Metuchen Partnership, a medical outreach program organized by the Catholic Charities Solidarity Team, and is a joint effort between St. Peter’s Hospital, the Diocese of Metuchen, and the Santa Rosa Diocese in Guatemala. “Members of the partnership travel to Guatemala, provide health clinics and provide training for their employees,” Jones said. Since 2004, the Santa Rosa Metuchen Partnership has launched 24 trips to provide such aid to the Santa Rosa diocese.

“It’s near and dear to my heart,” said Jones regarding the Santa Rosa Metuchen Partnership. “I’m actually on the Catholic Relief Services team for our diocese.”

Both Jones and the members of the Saint Bartholomew’s Youth Group are actively soliciting participants for the dance-a-thon. “We have no projections or estimates whatsoever, but the kids are definitely interested,” Jones said.
