The Ephrussi Family: A History in Literature, Art and Music

Learn more about Paris life through the eyes of well-known flaneur, friend of the impressionists, patron of the Paris Opera and owner of The Gazette des Beaux Arts, Charles Ephrussi, during a multi-media presentation at 1 p.m., Friday, June 15. Visit the East Brunswick Public Library for a panel composed of Susan Lipstein, a librarian; and  Maryann Zolota and Peter Cancro, OLLI-RU instructors, as they focus on Charles Ephrussi in Paris during the late nineteenth century. As rich and respected as the Rothschilds, the Ephrussi Family “burned like a comet” in nineteenth century Paris and Vienna. This grand banking family has roots as grain merchants in Odessa, Russia before they emigrated to Paris and Vienna.  Charles Ephrussi’s collection of netuskes forms the core of Edmund de Waal’s best seller, “The Hare with the Amber Eyes.” Charles is also the gentleman in the top hat in Renoir’s “The Luncheon of the Boating Party.” This free event is sponsored by the Middlesex County chapter of the Brandeis National Committee and the Library.
