Playhouse 22's 2011-2012 Season is Announced

"Barefoot in the Park,""Sweeney Todd," and more will be featured during the upcoming season.

Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s community theater located at Cranbury Road’s East Brunswick Cultural Center on, has announced its slate of productions for the upcoming 2011-2012 mainstage Season:

The season will begin on Sept. 16, 2011, with a production of Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park.” The show will be directed by Mary Lynn Dobson, who directed Playhouse 22’s 2009 production of “Guys and Dolls.”

On Oct. 28, the Playhouse will open its production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s classic musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," directed by veteran Playhouse 22 director Mark Kalet.

From Dec. 9 through Dec. 18, the theater will mount its traditional holiday production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” adapted and directed by Tony Adase.

The theater’s first production in 2012 will be William Inge’s play “Bus Stop," directed by Jon Heron. While he has directed several productions at other area theaters, this will be Heron’s first directorial effort at Playhouse 22.

Following “Bus Stop,” the playhouse will close its season with two musicals. “Gypsy” will open on April 27 under the guidance of director Gerry Appel, who also oversees the group’s Playhouse Acting Academy.

The final production of the season, Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me a Tenor,” will open on June 8, and will be directed by Mike Fabian.

The slate for the Playhouse’s “On the Edge” Black Box season for 2011 to 2012 will be announced soon.

Each mainstage production will run for three weekends with the exception of “A Christmas Carol," which will run for two weekends.
