Summer International Film Festival (VIDEO)

Great films from around the world, all right here at the library.

Come by the East Brunswick Public Library and catch great movies from around the world. With five more entries to be shown as part of the Summer International Film Festival, the Library is a great place to see some great films. Sponsored by the Friends of The Library, the entries will be shown twice, once at 1:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m.

Laila’s Birthday Palestine-2008-71 minutes-Not Rated. A former judge forced to make a living as a taxi driver attempts to keep his promise to return home after work with a birthday cake for his daughter.  During the course of the day, he contends with bureaucracy, bombs and unruly passengers in this farce set in the West Bank city of Ramallah.  Tuesday, July 17.

Queen to Play France-2009-97 minutes-Not Rated. A middle-aged chambermaid reinvents herself as a champion chess player under the tutelage of her eccentric employer, a reclusive American widower.  Set on the beautiful island of Corsica, this dramatic comedy stars Kevin Kline in his first French-speaking role. Tuesday, July 24.

Korkoro France-2009-111 minutes-Not Rated. A family of Gypsies searching for work in France are interned when their nomadic lifestyle is outlawed during World War II.  Marie-Josee Croze plays Mademoiselle Lundi, the French school teacher who tries to rescue them.  Inspired by true events, this drama was written and directed by Tony Gatlif, a French national of Romany and Algerian descent,  and is presented in French and Romany.  Tuesday, July 31.

The Artist France-2011-100 minutes-PG-13. A silent movie star sees his career overshadowed by a younger generation with the advent of the talkies in 1927.  This modern silent movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Music.  Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Nora’s Will Mexico-2008-92 minutes-Not Rated. A Mexican matriarch gathers her family together for Passover but her sudden demise forces her ex-husband to plan her funeral and reexamine their marriage.  This unique comic drama won seven Ariel Awards for first-time director Mariana Chenilla. Tuesday, Aug. 14.
