Following on the incredible success of the first Freecycle event this past fall, the second East Brunswick FREECYCLING event will be held Sunday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crystal Springs parking lot. This is a joint project of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission (www.friendsebec.com), the Division of Recreation, Parks and Community Services (http://www.facebook.com/ebrec) and the Recycling Center (http://www.eastbrunswick.org/departments/recycling.asp). The event is open to anyone regardless of where you live.
I suspect many of you reading this that didn't make the first event are asking what the heck is FREECYCLING? Well, it is all of the tenets of the mantra "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" all rolled into one fun program. It's a fleamarket, a yard sale and a picking opportunity and its FREE! Freecycling is the perfect opportunity to get rid of unwanted clutter without the hassle of a garage sale and to score some cool new clutter! As the saying goes "one person's junk is another person's treasure" so come find some new treasure!
The first Freecycle event was an incredible success with more than 28 tons of stuff changing hands! 90% of the materials changed hands and only 10% was recycled or disposed of.
FREECYCLING is simply an opportunity to donate and recycle virtually anything* by bringing it to the Crystal Springs parking lot. But that's only the half of it. The best part is that you can take away anything else you want that someone else left there. It's a big trading event and it's all FREE! It's a way for all of us to find something we need and keep as much stuff out of our landfill as possible in a fun way. We will have a vendor there who will take away anything that is remaining at the end of the day and will recycle it. A portion of the profits from his recycling effort will be donated to the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission (www.friendsebec.com) so that we can continue to bring year round free programming like the Butterfly Park (http://www.friendsebec.com/butterflypark.htm), Moth Nights (http://www.friendsebec.com/mothnight.htm), Salamander Crossings (http://www.friendsebec.com/salamandercrossing.htm), the new Green Book Club (http://ebgreenbookclub.blogspot.com/), the Option Green Lecture Series (http://www.friendsebec.com/optiongreen.htm) and so much more.
*You can bring or take items such as - furniture, clothing, bicycles, fish tanks, kitchen items—dishes, pots and pens, silverware, small appliances; garage items—tools, pipes, screws and nails, power tools; electronics—DVD players, VCR, cables and wires, printers, and any other items made of, or containing metal. Usable items will be freecycled and free for the taking, unusable and broken items will be recycled along with anything left at the end of the day by our vendor. Do not bring TV's, computer monitors, paints, pesticides, or any hazardous material.
Details of the Freecycling event are on the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission website (www.friendsebec.com). And if you aren't a Friends member, why not? It's FREE!
