FALL HAIR MAKEOVERS: The Secret To A Perfect "New" Look!

It never fails, the moment the leaves start changing colors and the weather gets a bit crisper, we have droves of clients who visit our East Brunswick salon, plop down in our chairs, and lament: "I want to change my hair and update my look, but I don't know where or how to begin!"

So here's the good news, figuring out what your "new look" should be doesn't need to be complicated, drastic and, best of all, it doesn't need to "follow" whatever the so-called "fashionistas" of the world are saying is "hip and trendy" for fall. Finding your best look is all about you, your lifestyle and what you want to achieve.

Here are a few tips for anyone hankering for a change, but unsure where to start:

  1. Pick a color and style that appeals to you. Go wild!  Remember, this is just the beginning.  Lots of women start their "quest" for a new look by finding a celebrity style or color (or maybe two or three) that they admire and would love to make their own.
  2. Go online and try a 'virtual makeover'. There are dozens of sites that offer "virtual makeovers" that are free and easy to use. You just take a picture with your hair pulled back, (you can even do it on your phone)  and then you can "sample" different colors, styles and textures.  Keep in mind - these online services aren't Photoshop-perfect (or even close to it). For instance, you may get a semi-close facsimile to what you'd look like in Miley Cyrus' short blond crop -- but it won't be 100 percent accurate.
  3. Consultations are key. Once you have a new look in mind, the next step is always to speak with a trained hair stylist about your ideas. Did you know that there are dozens of factors that play into your new hairstyle? A trained stylist will ask you about your lifestyle. For instance, do you have time in the morning to dedicate to a new hairstyle, or would an easier-to-maintain Keratin treatment be better for you? Are you willing to come into the salon every few weeks to update your cut or color, or would you rather try a few face-framing highlights to ease into a lighter shade? Also, will the color you've chosen flatter your eyes and skin tone? Are your best features going to be accentuated with this cut and tone? Would a few select extensions help thicken your hair and allow you to achieve a look that's very different from the one your sporting now? Of course, only you (and your hairdresser) will know for sure!

These are just a few tips, but of course, one of the most challenging aspects of updating your look is visualizing yourself in a whole new way -- it's not easy for any of us -- which is why having a great stylist to help guide you is key to getting a perfect new look.

I hope that whatever kind of "hair makeover" you're interested in doing, it makes you look and feel great. Thanks for taking the time to read this blog.
