Area Heat Index May Surpass 100 Degrees Today, Weather Service Warns

The National Weather Service has issued a strong heat and humidity advisory for central New Jersey.

It's gonna be a scorcher today. 

The National Weather Service has issued a strong heat advisory today for the central New Jersey area from noon to 8 pm. 

They are warning of temperatures hitting the high 90s, along with high humidity. The combined heat index - the combination of heat and humidity - could rise into the 100 to 105 degree range.

That means that residents should avoid spending much time outdoors today if possible, and seek air conditioned environments. This is especially true for vulnerable populations such as very young children, the sick, and the elderly.

The National Weather Service is also warning that pets should be brought inside in air conditioning, and at the very least, they should be given a shady area outside with plenty of drinking water nearby.

People who must be outside should take frequent breaks and stay well hydrated, and to be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
