City Spokesman: Route 18 to Remain Closed for Tuesday Morning Rush Hour

Raritan River expected to rise again Monday night.

Reports are coming into New Brunswick Patch that parts of Route 18 in the city are being opened to traffic, but a city spokesman says the Raritan River is expected to rise again tonight, causing the road to be closed by Tuesday morning.

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, New Brunswick resident Charlie Kratovil tweeted "Route 18 North is accessible from New Street interchange and its smooth sailing from there," followed by "Preparations are being made to open Route 18 South from Piscataway into New Brunswick in approx. 10 minutes,"

Bill Bray, spokesman for the city of New Brunswick, would not confirm that Route 18 was being opened, but stressed that it would be inaccessible to morning rush hour traffic on Tuesday.

"Drivers should make alternatives plans (for the morning commute)," Bray said. "Stay away from Route 18 and downtown New Brunswick for the Tuesday morning rush...We anticipate it to be as difficult as it was today," he said.

Bray said that the closure of 18 resulted in "wall to wall" gridlocked traffic around the downtown area of the city on Monday.
