UPDATED: East Brunswick Boy Believed to Have Died in California

The Bowne-Munro student was on vacation at Sequoia National Park when the accident occured.

East Brunswick residents are mourning the loss of an 11-year-old elementary school student whose body was found in Sequoia National Park on Monday.

According to the Fresno County Sherriff’s Office, search and rescue personnel found the body of a boy who fell into Ten Mile Creek on Friday while with family.

The boy, Bowne-Munro student Daniel Shaposhnikov, apparently fell into a tributary of the Kings River last week . He was reported missing at approximately 6 p.m. that night, according to the sheriff’s office. According to the sherriff's office, the cause of death was "blunt force trauma due to the fall."

Daniel was visiting the park with his family during Spring Break and had been hiking with other family members along Ten Mile Creek located on Forest Service land near Yucca Flats in Eastern Fresno County, just outside the Sequoia National Park boundary.

According to the sheriff’s department, Daniel’s father had apparently helped him down a steep incline before going back up a short distance to help other family members.  When the father turned around, the boy was gone and there were slide marks leading to the water below.

After the initial report on Friday, as many as 30 Sheriff’s Search and Rescue members, and the helicopter Eagle One, immediately responded.  Weather conditions made it impossible for Eagle One to fly the area, however a ground search was started, according to the sheriff's department.

According to the sheriff’s department, conditions where the search took place are dangerous.  Steep, rocky terrain lead down to the creek, which was moving fast due to the snow runoff.  On a scale of 1-6, experts place the creek at a Class 6, making it impossible for anyone to safely enter.

Daniels body was eventually found approximately 400 feet downstream from where he was believed to have fallen.

The sheriffs’ office did not release Daniel’s name as per the family’s wishes.

As reported elsewhere, Daniel was a student of Bowne-Munro Elementary School and a member of the state champion United FC soccer team, which was honored earlier this spring by the East Brunswick Soccer Club.

Bowne-Munro principal Joyce Boley said Daniel will be missed.

"Daniel was a wonderful boy, a great student, and a terrific friend to his classmates. He will be deeply missed in our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," she said in an e-mail.
