East Brunswick Works Toward Sustainability

East Brunswick was won the bronze, and with a little work, a silver is not too far  behind.

On Monday, May 21, the township received a plaque from Sustainable Jersey proclaiming that it has reached the bronze level certification from the group. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for  municipalities that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term, according to www.sustainablejersey.com.

As a group, Sustainable Jersey identifies actions that municipalities can implement to become "certified" and be considered leaders on the path to a sustainable community. The organization also provides guidance and tools to enable communities to make progress on each action. The certification is a rigorous and meaningful designation.  All actions taken by municipalities to score points toward certification must be accompanied by documentary evidence and will be reviewed.  To reach a bronze level, a township must receive 150 points. A silver level is achieved when a township gets 350 votes.

“As you continue to work with your green teams and commissions, the next step is to get the silver, which would be great…just keeping working right along and before you know it you’ll be a silver," said Pam Mount, of Sustainable New Jersey. Certification does not indicate that a municipality is "sustainable." Rather it indicates that the municipality has taken the first significant step on the long journey toward sustainability.
