Library Offers New Spin on Summer Reading

Parents are invited to join their children and participate in this year's summer reading club.

Whether it’s for school, for fun, or just to get them away from the TV, parents have always know the importance of encouraging children to read.

As part of this year’s Summer Reading Club, the tables have been turned a bit. In addition to having children sign up for this year’s club, Reading is So Delicious!, parents also are being invited to sign up and read alongside their children.

“We decided to invite parents since they are always encouraging their children to read. Now their children can encourage them and they can all read at the same time,” said Carol Phillips.

Parents are invited to sign up online, record their reading, and like their children, get carried away in a good book this summer.

“It’s a great opportunity for parents and their children to spend time while doing something worthwhile and fun,” said Phillips.

Every year more than 1,000 students participate in the library’s summer reading clubs, and this year is no exception. With a summer filled with cooking and craft programs, carnivals and even a trip to Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center, this summer promises to be the best yet.

The importance of reading over the summer is no secret. National research shows that students who participate in summer reading programs score higher on achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year. Studies also show that those students are well prepared for the fall, more confident in the classroom, and perform better overall in school.
