National Moth Night Kicks Off Tonight

The Friends of the East Brunswick Envirionmental Commission are kicking off Moth Week at Elk Pine Woods tonight.

The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental  Commission will be kicking off the start of “National Moth Week in none other than the birth place of global mothing, East Brunswick, tonight (Monday, July 23).

The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental commission, in conjunction with National Moth Week, invite you to celebrate the first night in a week of Nocturnal Biodiversity at Elk Pine Woods, starting at 9 p.m.

Join them in undertaking what might be the biggest Global Citizen Science Project ever attempted in the history of moth study. We will be attracting moths and other entomology subjects to a white sheet using a Mercury Vapor Light, UV lighting and possibly fermented bait that is painted on the trees. It will be dark, so make sure to check the batteries in the flashlight and don’t forget to bring it. There will be no rain date for this event.

This small park is a real gem--with its outstanding views of Farrington Lake, its  peaceful feel and deep shade from towering White Pines, and the likelihood of finding a Great Horned Owl or at least evidence of one, and don’t forget the moths! So come on out and visit what Township Attorney Michael Baker characterized as "the single most beautiful piece of property in East Brunswick."

The park is easily accessible by parking in the large gravel parking lot at the end of the access road to the Elks Lodge (off a long narrow road from Hardenburg Lane, look for the Elks Sign). A sign near the corner of the parking lot notes the access point to the trailhead.
