NJ Transit Offers Travel Tips for Inclement Weather

With forecasts calling for an autumn snowstorm to potentially impact parts of our region, NJ Transit is reminding rail, bus and light rail customers to exercise caution during this approaching storm and visit njtransit.com for the most up-to-date service information.  NJ Transit is mobilizing operations, customer service and police personnel across the state to minimize service impacts and maximize customer safety, and will continue to closely monitor weather forecasts. 

For rail customers, the combination of wintry precipitation and falling leaves could result in slippery rail conditions across the system.  Slippery rail, an age-old problem caused by autumn’s falling leaves and wet weather conditions, affects all railroads in the Northeast and other parts of the world where deciduous trees are prevalent.  When falling leaves are crushed by train wheels, the decaying leaf material creates an oily residue that coats the rails, resulting in poor traction for trains and resulting delays.

If your area is hit with snow, please allow yourself additional travel time and use caution walking from parking lots, on platforms and when boarding and deboarding trains, buses and light rail vehicles.

Due to the expected inclement weather, NJ Transit Bus Route No. 197 tickets/passes will be honored on Main/Bergen County Line trains at Suffern Station and Short Line buses in Orange County on Saturday, October 29.

• Listen closely to public address announcements at stations for late breaking service information.

• Build additional travel time into your trip to a station, terminal or bus stop.
• Stairs, flooring and platforms can be slippery, so please use caution when walking along wet surfaces or any outdoor surface exposed to the weather. Use extra care when boarding or exiting buses and trains.

• Report slippery or unsafe conditions to bus operators, train crews or NJ Transit staff.
