NJDEP: Dangerous Weather Ahead for Southern and Central New Jersey

An Ozone Action Day has been declared for sensitive groups in these regions on Thursday.

The current air quality is moderate, but more dangerous weather is on the horizon for sensitive groups in southern and central New Jersey.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has declared an Ozone Action Day for Thursday, May 30, for southern and central New Jersey.

Ozone is forecast to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups of people, including the elderly, the young and those with respiratory diseases, such as asthma. Unhealthy levels are projected due to southwest winds, sunny skies and hot temperatures.

The National Weather Service projects temperatures will reach between 90 and 95 degrees on Thursday. Moderate levels of fine particulate are forecast statewide.

The Air Quality Index is projected to be 105. By comparison, the current index is 55.

Those who would feel the most impact should avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon and evening hours.

Currently, moderate levels of ozone and fine particulate are forecast across the state, due to mostly sunny skies, warm temperatures and southwest winds that will bring dirtier air to the region.
