Some Power Restored, Route 18 and Old Bridge Turnpike Closed

Falling trees and power lines are making the clean up from Hurricane Irene a challenge. township Water is safe to drink.

Power has been restored to some portions of East Brunswick now that PSE&G work crews have replaced a transformer on Riva Avenue. The transformer was damanged by a falling tree.

However, PSE&G is still reporting between 2,000 and 5,000 of its customers in East Brunswick are without power. JCP&L is reporting 4,642 of its customers are without power.

Elsewhere, Route 18 is closed to north and southbound traffic at the East Brunswick/Old Bridge border, and Old Bridge Turnpike is closed because of falling trees.

Mayor Stahl said two township tree crews and two outside contractors have been working throughout the storm but power lines are posing a danger in some places.

Other alerts include the mayor announcing that township water is safe to drink as of 12:45 p.m. today, and that boiling is unnecessary, as it is in other municipalities.
