Township Advises That Residents Stay Off the Roads. New Brunswick is CLOSED

The effects of Hurricane Sandy are already being felt in the area, but forecasts are calling for things to get worse.

According to weather.com, squalls can be expected between 1 and 6 p.m. today, and high tide this evening could bring record flooding to the area.  High wind warnings will remain in effect from 8 a.m. today until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the northeast from 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 75 mph . Winds will shift to southerly with gusts of 60 to 70 mph early tonight.

To prepare, East Brunswick has already called for mandatory evacuations of several areas, including Main Street from River Road to Old Bridge Turnpike; Squire Street; Emerson Street; Oak Street; River Road up to Millman Drive; Millman Drive; Jernee Drive; Cornell Drive; and portions of Addington Court.

Mayor Stahl, the East Brunswick Police Department and the East Brunswick Office of Emergency Management are advising that road conditions due to Hurricane Sandy are expected to be treacherous. Motor vehicle traffic is encouraged to be limited only to those that are necessary to be on the roadway.

A State of Emergency has been declared and all are asked to exercise common sense and good judgment. If travel on the roadways is not absolutely necessary, stay off the roadways. If you choose to travel on the roadways, the high volume of anticipated calls for service for first responders may result in excessive delays if you require assistance.

Elsewhere, New Brunswick has advised that as of 9 a.m. Monday, the City will be shut down. Non-emergency personnel will not be allowed on city streets. Emergency personnel should have proper identification.
