East Brunswick Special Senate Election Guide

What you need to know for Wednesday's showdown between Cory Booker and Steve Lonegan.

The special election showdown between Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan to succeed the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg will be decided on Wednesday.

The candidates are seeking the Senate seat left vacant when Lautenberg died of pneumonia in June. Lautenberg represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate for 29 years before his death at the age of 89-years-old.

Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa was appointed by Gov. Chris Christie to fill the seat vacated by Lautenberg's death.

Polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

In September, Booker held a 35-point lead over Lonegan in a Rutgers-Eagleton poll, a poll conducted by the Stockton Polling Institute showed Booker held a 26-point lead. Those leads have recently narrowed, down to 12 and 13 points in some polls.

New Jersey has not elected a Republican senator since 1972.
