Rush Holt to Visit East Brunswick Library

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) will join leading state and federal library advocates at the East Brunswick Public Library at 11:30 a.m., Monday, July 28, to announce a new law that integrates local libraries with federal job training programs.

Holt and leading library advocates will tour the East Brunswick library to highlight its existing services for job seekers and show how the new law will allow for expansion of these services across New Jersey.

On Tuesday, July 22, President Obama signed into law the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.  The new law includes provisions that Holt wrote to recognize libraries as One-Stop partners and includes adult education and literacy programs offered at libraries as statewide employment and training activities.

Holt previously introduced the Workforce Investment through Local Libraries (WILL) Act to help local libraries better assist job seekers and individuals looking for job training by integrating them into federally supported job training efforts authorized by the Workforce Investment Act.

In New Jersey, libraries and librarians have been leading this effort to help struggling individuals. According to a recent survey, 95 percent of New Jersey’s libraries already help people access and use employment resources, including assistance with job searches, creating resumes, and submitting employment applications.

Guests include Holt, Mary L. Chute, New Jersey State Librarian, Patricia Tumulty, Executive Director, NJ Library Association, MaryEllen Firestone, Library Director, East Brunswick Public Library, Emily Sheketoff, Executive Director, American Library Association Washington Office, and Jane Brady, Former Director, Middlesex County Workforce Investment Board
