Aloha, one hour away

Philadelphia Flower Show is here

The 2012 Philadelphia International Flower show opens today.  We got a glimpse at the PHS member’s preview and it is going to be wonderful.  Generally regarded as the premier flower show in this Country, this year is exceptional.

The Flower Show theme is Hawaii, Islands of Aloha.  As in past exhibits, this means color, scent and fabulous creativity.  This year the queen of tropical island blossoms, the orchid, is everywhere.  Dozens of displays showcase hundreds of different orchids in often-breathtaking settings. There are larger showpiece exhibits than in recent Shows and hundreds of competition displays.

The remarkable thing about orchids is that while they all have something in common, they are also so radically different.  They seem to come in every color and hue. Giant blooms rise up cliff faces and tiny flashes of color cling to pieces of bark. The range of shapes and sizes is stunning.

The show has the requisite row after row of vendors selling tempting crafts, needed equipment, gifts and of course everything to do with flowers (including plants themselves).   One should probably set a budget before walking in the door, because there is great temptation.

We always look forward to this Show to bring us the first hint of spring and start us stirring with thoughts of warm days to come.  This year you will travel to Islands where sweet smells blow on warm breezes and everywhere is nature’s incredible beauty.  Fortunately, you can get there in an hour without taking off your shoes for TSA Security.
