Harvie's Inferno: Marty's Comeback a Scoring Success

Harvie's Inferno: The Devilsaholic goes bananas for Marty's goal and the return of the Gummo line!

Martin Brodeur did what any player does after being sidelined for 13 games with a pinched nerve in the back, he scores his third career goal, and first power play goal to kick off the scoring as the Devils defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 Thursday night.

It wasn’t the prettiest of Brodeur’s three career tallies, but it was effective. He brushed the puck away and a delayed penalty was called on the Devils,  Jordan Staal received the puck and sent it off the far side boards, and into his empty net, as Dan Ellis headed to the bench for the extra attacker. Essentially Brodeur was credited with the goal because he was the last Devil to touch the puck. As I’ve been told it doesn’t matter how they go in, just that they make it past the red line and into the net.

This gives Brodeur sole possession of yet another NHL record, most career goals (playoff and regular season) with three.

But let’s not forget that there was 56 more minutes for the Devils to play after the goalie’s goal, and not all of it was pretty, in fact the tally was the only real highlight for the Devils in the first period. The team, was flat and let up 11 shots in the first. However, they quickly turned that around, only allowing seven shots in the remaining two periods. The Devils also only had four shots in the first period, but go 18 more in the last two periods, scoring on three of them. Peter Harrold had a stellar backhander, Adam Henrique got a terrific rebound goal and Andrei Loktionov scored on his first game back after sitting for two games with soreness.

The win was vital for the Devils, who prior to the game found themselves out of the top eight in East for the first time all season. The win bumped them into seventh, but they are not out of the danger zone. The Rangers and hurricanes are only two points back and the Islanders only five and with just 17 games remaining, each game is getting more and more important.

But I don’t want to rain on the parade. The Devils did everything they needed to do to get the win. They scored first, forechecked hard, rolled over four lines effectively (getting some good play from Albany call-up Tim Sestito, and remembered to shoot the puck.

Patrik Elias had a sick assist on the Peter Harrold goal, which started with some hard work in the corners by Travis Zajac.

Furethermore, the Gummo line (Ryan Carter, Stephen Gionta, Stever Bernier) line was back in tact, and while they didn't score, the line was consistently putting pressure on the Hurricanes, wearing down the defense and Ellis. Great to see those guys back together.

Overall it was a step in the right direction for a team that has not been playing its best recently. Let’s hope this translates into some confidence and more wins for Jersey’s team.

Let’s go Devils!
