Spring at the East Brunswick Community Garden

Our Community Gardeners are preparing the garden for it's fourth year of growing fresh food and friendships.

The East Brunswick Community Garden will open soon for the growing season.  We started four years ago with 80 plots; it is now twice as big with plots for individuals, charities , and senior center use.  The garden also has a shared garden, apple trees, shared berries and potato beds and, of course, many happy gardeners.

The garden was founded by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, and is managed by the Friends’ board and garden members, with the help of the town. Our garden has received extensive media coverage from local and state press including EBTV, The Sentinel, The East Brunswick Patch, the Star Ledger and Channel 12. Our relationship with a sister garden, Merry Corner Community Garden in East Brunswick, Melbourne, has made us famous in Australia as well!

Gardening creates special friendships and garden members help each other tend their plots when help is needed. We have a number of experienced and master gardeners who help with advice and support.  Gardeners talk to each other daily, at the garden and over the internet via a Google group, where questions are asked and answered (for example: “Is this a good bug or a bad bug?”), announcements are made (“Green beans ready to pick at the shared area!”), and events are planned.  Last year our garden donated 1,000 lbs of fresh produce to the town’s Senior Center we are planning to do the same in 2012.
