Boat Rescue, Gunpoint Robbery, Teen Assault Charges Top NJ News

The Coast Guard rescued six people from a life raft after the 38-foot boat they were in ran aground and began taking on water in Barnegat Inlet Thursday morning. A crew member on board the Southern Comfort, a sport fishing boat based in Fork River, radioed Cost Guard watch standers at approximately 7:45 a.m. reporting they were aground on the rocks of the inlet's north jetty.

 

Police Charge Three After Teaneck Merchant Held At Gunpoint

Three New York men looking to collect on a debt face kidnapping and robbery charges after they held a Teaneck restaurant owner in the store’s basement and demanded money at gunpoint, police said.

Authorities say 15-year-old Lennon Baldwin, a freshman at Morristown High School, was the victim of an assault at the school, told to lie about it and then robbed in the Century 21 parking lot just weeks before committing suicide on March 28 in his Morris Township home. Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi announced Wednesday the charges against two Morristown juveniles and 19-year-old Morristown resident Michael Conway for their alleged involvement in the incidents in early March.

As Dharun Ravi submitted himself to authorities to begin serving a 30-day jail sentence for spying on his Rutgers roommate, the roommate's family on Thursday said the sentence "disregarded" the jury verdict and also questioned the sincerity of Ravi's apology.

Anne Torres, the communications director for Newark City Hall, has confirmed her resignation, effective Tuesday. Torres' departure comes in the wake of Booker's candid comments last week on NBC's "Meet the Press," during which he lambasted President Barack  Obama for his campaign attacks against Mitt Romney.

 

Amazon to Collect New Jersey Sales Tax

Online retailer Amazon.com has agreed to collect 7 percent sales tax on purchases made in New Jersey starting in July 2013, the same time it plans to begin building two new distribution warehouses in the state. The agreement, announced jointly by Gov. Chris Christie and Amazon executive Paul Meisner at the Statehouse on Wednesday, could bring thousands of construction jobs and 1,500 permanent positions at the warehouses. A Gloucester Township man allegedly assaulted a woman and threatened to stab her with a knife inside his home Tuesday afternoon before being taken into custody by SWAT officers. The victim summoned Gloucester Township Police Tuesday after she was able to escape from the suspect's home, where she reportedly was struck with a hammer and threatened with a large knife.

The trial for a Hopatcong man accused of killing a borough woman has been moved to Sept. 11—a week after what would have bene her 25th birthday. It was originally scheduled to begin Tuesday.

 

Her classmates relaxed and hit the beach on Memorial Day weekend, but Ocean City High School senior Karli Scott danced with Beyoncé. The 18-year-old went to an open audition on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, and by that Friday, she was in Ovation Hall at the new Revel Casino in Atlantic City, practicing with the other dancers and Beyoncé herself.

 

Gov. Chris Christie touted his proposal to cut income taxes by 10 percent and urged the state legislature to approve the plan by the June 30 deadline. Christie's proposed across-the-board 10 percent income tax cut is scheduled to be phased in over three years—2013, 2014 and  2015.

 

A former Montville first-grade teacher who has been jailed on charges he allegedly sexually assaulted two of his students has now been accused of having a sexual relationship with a Butler High School track athlete he coached at the school in the mid-'90s, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said Saturday. According to a statement released by Capt. Jeffrey Paul, a third victim recently came forward, accusing Jason Fennes, 37, of Bloomfield, of having a sexual relationship that began when she was 15 and he was her high school track coach.
