In the span of a week, pepper spray has been in the news. First, as an unreasonable, over the top reaction by campus police at UC Davis against innocent students exercising their right to protest and then on black friday, when a Walmart customer used it to jump the line for $1.88 sheets. I don't know which situation is more bizarre, but both are examples of human extremism beyong the pale of reason. Our reaction, those of us who have some sense of perspective and objectivity toward social behavior, politics and common decency, should be to loudly object, criticize such extremism and demand the better side of ourselves.
