They Gave All, So We Could Be Free

The meaning of Pearl Harbor

December 7, 2011, is the 70th anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor.  On that Sunday morning, 2,402 men died, 1,282 were wounded and we entered a war that would consume 416,800 American lives.   Those few hours changed the United States forever.

The men who lost their lives in the first shocking hours and those that perished in the cataclysm that followed, gave everything so that we could be free.  It is a debt we can never repay, nor perhaps fully understand. However, we can honor their sacrifice.

My father served in Europe during WWII. My uncle served in the Pacific and was there when the Bomb was dropped.  He never talked about his experiences, until the last days of his life.  We were stunned by the revelations that were clear in his memory.

We must recognize and treasure their gift to us by always striving to make this Nation truly the home of freedom, opportunity and justice. In addition, we thank our present generation of service men and women for the sacrifice, courage and leadership they provide to us all. They protect and preserve our freedom.    On this important day, remember to show your appreciation to our veterans.
