Why Memorial Day?

Remembering the fallen

My children ask me, why do you have to leave our family for Memorial services?

I answer that I have always celebrated Memorial Day. When I grew up, we spent every Memorial Day honoring those who served our country, including many who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their life so others could be free.

We always went to a solemn event followed by an afternoon at the VFW. My Uncle was an Air Force veteran and my dad served in the Navy during WWII. I knew it was a day of great importance to them and therefore to us.

Today, young men and women continue to serve our country for the same reason—to protect our citizens. I ask that you join me this Memorial Day in honoring our soldiers and remembering those that have given their lives to protect us.
