MCAT exam is changing for good! This is Part 1 of 4 to summarize the contents in the exam.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) New Exam: Part 1 of 4.

 Four test sections are:

  1. Biological  and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  2. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  3. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
  4. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills

In this Part 1 (of 4), I will give a brief outline about the first section.

Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems

You have to focus your studies in the following categories:

1. Structure and function of a Cell:

- Genetic information within the cell, and how it is transmitted from one generation to the other

- How the genetic information from the gene is translated into protein structure

- How amino acids make the protein structure.

- How cells produce energy necessary for the life (includes metabolism)

2. Single cellular and Multicellular organisms:

- How molecules within the cells are assembled for coordinated function of a cell

- How cells and group of cells are assembled to create a multicellular organisms

- Cell division and cellular differentiation

- Prokaryotes and viruses:  Structure and growth, Physiology, and Genetics

 3. Homeostasis of a multicellular organism:

- How complex systems and tissues sense the internal and external environment to maintain the homeostasis

- Nervous and Endocrine systems in maintaining homeostasis

Remember that the exam will test you on how you can take this information and interpret in scientific inquiry, reasoning, and research and statistics skills to solve problems.

This is the major difference between studying at the undergraduate biology course and getting ‘A’ and taking the MCAT exam with the same knowledge.

Biochemistry concepts, Cellular/molecular biology, and Basic research methods and statistics concepts are taught in all the undergraduate institutions during your first and second semester courses.

Good luck!

I know you can do it!
