Obit: Elizabeth “Betty” Waltz Smith

Smith died Oct. 2 at the age of 88.

Elizabeth “Betty” Waltz Smith died Oct. 2 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.  She was 88.

Born in Stelton, she resided in Edison, New Brunswick, and Rahway before moving to East Brunswick in 1957.

She worked in the placement office at Rutgers University in New Brunswick in the 1940s until she married and started a family.

Betty enjoyed playing and teaching Bridge. She created a unique Bridge tally, and founded a small mail-order company, Tal-E-Pad Co.

She loved to crochet from an early age, and was a multiple ribbon winner for her beautiful handiwork at the Middlesex County Fair. 

She loved to spend time at her beach house on Long Beach Island, and enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City.

Her caring, wise, and joyful spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her sister, Anne McCartney.

Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years, Robert C. Smith; two sons, Robert Jr. and his wife Barbara of Hillsborough, and Donald and his wife Marcia of Maui, HI; a daughter, Diane and her husband Kenneth Peterson of Somerville; two sisters, Rose Cyphers of Berkeley Heights and Irene Pardun of Milltown; six granddaughters, Jennifer, Julianne, Melissa, Carly, Rebecca, and Amanda; and a great granddaughter, Juliet.
