EAST
BRUNSWICK TROOP 223 EXPLORES THE HISTORY OF NYC

ON
AN ‘URBAN HIKE” THROUGH LOWER MANHATTAN

 On April, 14, 2014,
East Brunswick Boy Scout Troop 223 participated in an
“urban hike” around Manhattan, visiting many historical landmarks.   This
exciting day began with a ride on the PATH train and a visit to the St. Mark in
the Bowery Church.   The Troop went on to Astor Place on 3rdAvenue
and learned how Cooper Union owner Peter Cooper accepted many Science and Art
students to a free college regardless of their race, color, or creed. Next was
a visit to the “Alamo,” a large black cube in Cooper Square to Lafayette Street
where the Troop successfully participated in a challenge, requiring the use of
teamwork to move the cube.  Following
this challenge, the Troop moved on to Joseph Papp Public Theater which housed
millions of European Hebrews during the Second World War and the Holocaust.  Hiking along, they stopped at the “NYU Brown Building”
where, in 1891, a horrible fire broke out killing many young workers, but
resulted in an initiative to provide safer working conditions.  The next destination on this hike was
Washington Square Park, where the boys located a white marble arch modeled
after Paris’s Arch di Triumphe.  They
also visited an historical site called “the hanging tree” where over 10,000
military traitors were hung to their deaths during revolutionary times.  The Troop then hiked through Little Italy and
Chinatown where they had lunch.  The
highlight of this trek was a visit to the 9/11Memorial and tour of ground zero
where they silently reflected on our nation’s recent tragedy.  Finally they hiked through the Financial District
on Wall Street to view the many skyscrapers and the New York Stock Exchange
building.
