Did your child study during the summer?

Summer is fun for the children (and Parents). Most children go to summer camp for sports and entertainment. Few go to academic enrichment programs. So what about academic work for children enjoying the sports in summer?

There are some studies show that no school work in summer can negatively affect students in Math and Reading. This loss of learning adds up every year. Students lose one month per year of learning, if they don’t study in summer. More troubling is that it affects low-income students far worst than their higher income peers.

If the students have to maintain higher academic standard every year, then summer academic enrichment program is necessary. There are no studies which I am aware that examines how long the students should engage academically during summer. My educational guess would be, at least one month of Math, Science, Reading and Writing has to be taught for all the students, K through 12. US must show higher standard in all the subjects than other developed countries. We, parents should encourage politicians to invest in education for economic growth and for new inventions in future. Sadly, scientific research being put on ‘non-essential’ category and this will affect our country’s new innovations in future. We have to fix the educational system. Summer learning loss and less money for education will push US backwards in new innovations. We, parents and teachers should pay close attention to our children’s education and our country’s future. Only 3 weeks left for the school. Did your child read 30min today? Did your child do Math for 60 min today? Did your child study science for 60min today?
