Father's Day and the YMCA

The story behind Father's Day... in 1909 Sonora Louise Smart was listening to a sermon celebrating Mother's Day and she thought of her father, a civil war veteran, who had raised her and her 5 brothers after their mother died in child birth.  Sonora then spoke to her minister at the Spokane Washington YMCA about an idea she had to celebrate fathers.

The minister decided to pass a resolution to observe Father's Day.  The Spokane YMCA sponsored the first Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1910 as Sonora's father was born in June.  The idea of a Father's Day spread and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended a national observance.  Today Father's Day is one of the most celebrated holiday!

Now you know the role that the YMCA played in organizing a special day to celebrate fathers!
