Accident Shuts Down Route 18

An accident that shut down southbound Route 18 is being blamed on a driver looking at her cell phone.

Southbound Route 18 was closed for about an hour Wednesday following a one-car accident at Route 18 and Naricon Place at about 3:45 p.m.

According to police, Orly Tamayo, 33, of South River, was driving south on Route 18 in the middle lane and approaching Naricon Place when she took her eyes off of the road to look at her cell phone and started to drift into the left lane. She then lost control of her vehicle and hit the concrete divider, causing her vehicle to roll on its side and then onto the roof, police said.

She complained of pain and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by Trans Med Ambulance Service. East Brunswick District 2 Independent Fire Company as well the Paramedic Unit from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was also on scene.

The accident was investigated by Patrolman Jason Fama of the East Brunswick Police Department’s Operations Section

As a result of the accident two southbound lanes were closed for approximately one hour while one northbound lane was closed for approximately one half hour. Tamayo was issued summonses for careless driving and use of a cell phone while driving.
