Cameras to Monitor People Who Run Lights

Cameras at the intersection of Route 18 and Tices Lane will videotape drivers who run the red light there.

East Brunswick announced that its intersection safety cameras began taking photos of red-light runners at designated intersections beginning March 2.

Cameras are positioned near the intersections and will capture still images and video of red-light running violations. During a 30-day period, a warning notice will be issued to the vehicle’s registered owner. There will be no fine for the warning notice. At the completion of the warning period, citations will be issued.

“The warning period will give residents an opportunity to become familiar with the system. We encourage people to slow down and definitely stop on red before the actual citations begin,” said Lt. Russell MacArthur in a press release. “This is a public safety program, and our goal is to deter red-light runners and prevent collisions resulting from these violations.”

A recent report by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety found that during the period from 2004-2008, road safety cameras saved 159 lives in 14 U.S. cities with large populations and could have prevented 815 deaths had all large cities in the country used the cameras.

Cameras will operate 24-hours a day and capture images of every vehicle running a red light at the intersection. Warning signs alerting drivers to the intersection safety cameras have been installed prior to the warning period.

The program is administered by American Traffic Solutions, Inc., with each violation reviewed and approved by the East Brunswick Police Department prior to being issued.
