Neighborhood Watch Meeting is Tuesday

The Police department wants more neighborhood watch programs. Find out more this week.

The East Brunswick Police Department wants to help the entire township become safer.

At 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Cultural Arts Center, the police department will be holding an information session on how to create and run your own neighborhood watch program.

“The neighborhood watch is really a self run program through the volunteers and residents that wish to create one and run it.,” said Patrolman Craig Hoover. “It’s not really an extension of the police department per se, but we support it once it gets running.”

The meeting will cover the responsibilities of a neighborhood watch, what is expected, and tips on how to recruit members and how to run one effectively. Being in a neighborhood watch is easy, said Hoover. It doesn’t require a huge time commitment or an extensive knowledge of the law. All it requires is a flash light, tips on how and what to report to the police and, of course, a willingness to make your neighborhood safer.

“We’ll provide the information for it, and by doing that, and us interacting with them, it creates a closer bond between us and the neighborhood,” said Hoover.

What makes a suspicious car suspicious, how best to report a call, and key information the police will need when you make that call are integral parts of any neighborhood watch.

“It’s about being trained on what to look for,” said Hoover. “All it takes is that one little bit of information and we can help. They become the eyes and ears for us, when we can’t be there 24/7 on ever street.
