Man Charged With Attempted Sexual Assault by Vernon Police

A woman has also been charged in the case.

A Hartford man who practices nursing in Vernon is facing charges related to attempted sexual assault and is in custody on a $1 million bond, police and court records indicate.

The warrant for the case against of Jay T. Mohler-Avery, 44, has been sealed at Rockville Superior Court, but judicial system records indicate he is due back in court on Nov. 9 and has yet to enter a plea.

Lt. William Meier of the Vernon Police Department said on Thursday that he cannot comment until the warrant is unsealed. Vernon police will likely conduct a news conference then to discuss the details of the arrest, which took place this week, he said.

The charges against Mohler-Avery are:

• First-degree conspiracy to commit sexual assault.
• Conspiracy to commit risk of injury to a child.
• First-degree attempt to commit sexual assault.
• Attempt to commit sexual assault of a child.

Several business listings indicate a nurse by that name practices on Hartford Turnpike in Vernon. Police would not comment on any arrests related to any specific practice.

A woman police are describing as a "co-conspirator" in the case is Candace Merriam. She is in custody on a $250,000 bond and has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 30, court records indicate.

She has not entered a plea, according to court records.

Court records indicate that Merriam, who was born in 1965, has been charged with:

• First-degree conspiracy to commit sexual assault.
• Conspiracy to commit risk of injury to a child.

The warrant for Merriam has also been sealed by the court.

Meier said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the suspects or the case can call 860-872-9126.

The last comment is not acceptable under the Patch terms of use policy. (http://vernon.patch.com/terms) and was taken down. We have to abide by the premise of innocent until proven guilty.

He is my Landlord and I always thought that something was up with those two. The sad part is candy used to always have this little girl with her that she used to say she was "babysitting". I pray that she wasn't one of there victims. Not only that, last Christmas he brought my children all Christmas gifts which I thought was weird also. Its not like I needed them. But I have 3 girls so just the thought of him looking at them sexually gives me chills up my spine! I hope him and his fat tramp pay for all the pain they caused!

Just comments that I felt were wierd. I still am having trouble digesting all the info coming out! So sick & demented!!
